In fiscal year 2010-2011, the Biofuels Center of North Carolina awarded $1,607,842 through its Statewide Biofuels Development Grants program. The program awards grants to nonprofit organizations and academic institutions across the state to help develop the biofuels sector. For this funding cycle, the Center identified specific priorities in the focused area of commercialization through a Request for Proposals process.
- Regional woody biomass analyses: Four funded projects that will work with forestry consultants to assess the availability of woody biomass in their respective regions. The strategy is a three-phase approach that will provide a regional assessment suggesting the optimum two sites per region, the validated infrastructure required for a biofuels production facility, and a detailed woody biomass assessment for the selected sites.
- Municipal solid waste projects: Two projects will explore the conversion of municipal solid waste into biofuels.
- Energy grasses projects: Three projects will study aspects of growing energy grasses for feedstock for the biofuels industry.
- Production innovations: Six projects look at important facets of the manufacture of biofuels in North Carolina
